Grilled Rosemary Old Fashioned

Many thanks to Jason at Ancient Fire Wines for this fabulous drink.  (http://ancientfirewineblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/grilled-herb-cocktails.html)  Connie and I tried the limoncello-gin with grilled thyme cocktail last week and it got me thinking about other drinks that could be made with grilled herbs.  I came up with a list.  But, knowing that Jason's the expert when it comes to mixology, I sent him on a quest to come up with some new ones too.  We were out of oranges and didn't want to make a grocery run so Connie used orange juice concentrate instead.  These were SO good.  And, that's coming from a scotch drinker who typically doesn't care for bourbon!  Can't wait to try the Strawberry Rosemary Cooler tonight!  Thank you Jason :-)

Grilled Rosemary Old Fashioned
Ingredients for one drink:
2 oz bourbon
1 oz rosemary infused simple syrup
     (1 part water, 2 parts sugar = 1/2 c water, 1 c sugar, 4 sprigs rosemary)
1/2  T orange juice concentrate
dash of bitters
2 maraschino cherries

Directions:
Grill the rosemary.

Make sure you just get the rosemary brown - don't char it :-)

Make the rosemary syrup by heating the water, then adding the sugar and stirring until it's dissolved.  Add the grilled rosemary sprigs and allow them to steep for at least an hour.

Combine the bourbon, rosemary simple syrup, orange juice and bitters.

Skewer the cherries on the rosemary and serve.

  3. Believe it or not I found several drink books that had rosemary sazeracs in them. I think the Savoy Cocktail Book was one of them. Pretty cool to recreate a classic!

  4. We have tons of rosemary and I luv to use it...never thought of grilling it. Such a great idea! It must really bring out the flavor and change it slightly. Thanks for sharing this!

  5. Hey Jason - That's cool that you recreated a classic!! Did any of them use the grilled rosemary? We did the strawberry coolers night before last. Really good! Did you see that my post today is my entry into your pizza contest? The toaster oven just dinged - leftover pizza for lunch :-) OH - did you or Margot get the email with the wine question? Take CAre, Kate

  7. None of the recipes I saw used the rosemary after grilling it. I think it made a difference in the aroma for sure so it was a nice bump from my persective.

I was amazed at the range of sazeracs overall. At the Underhill Lounge (http://underhill-lounge.flannestad.com/) Erik recreated a month work of them earlier this year. He is doing all 888 cocktails from the Savoy Cocktail Book. Killer project!
